Tips for Managing Dental Anxiety in Kids

Anxiety is normal when children face an unknown situation. Because going to the dentist may involve seeing a strange new medical professional for the first time or undergoing a procedure that seems frightening, it can be difficult to reassure your child that visiting the dentist is normal and can be a positive experience. However, you can minimize their fears and help them cope with their anxiety by taking a few simple steps leading up to their appointment.

  1. Be sure you choose a kid-friendly dentist. Our pediatric dentist, Dr. Vakili, is an expert in her field and has a deep understanding of children’s dental needs. Her love for children and ability to interact with them on their level puts them at ease and creates a friendly bond, making them the perfect choice for your child’s dental care.
  2. If your child is new to our office, we recommend bringing them in for an informal tour a week before their appointment. During this tour, they can become familiar with the waiting area, meet our friendly staff, and take a look at an exam room. This way, things won’t seem as strange or intimidating on the day of their appointment.
  3. Remember, your words have the power to boost your child’s confidence. Be sure you praise your child for their bravery and maturity during and after their visit to the dentist. Your encouragement can make a world of difference in how they perceive their dental experience.
  4. If they have a particular stuffed animal or toy they use for emotional support, they are welcome to bring it with them to their dental appointment.
  5. Explain in simple, accurate terms what procedures to expect so your child is prepared and not surprised when they arrive at our office. Children appreciate honesty and directness.
  6. Let your child play dentist at home with you as the patient. Encourage them to look at your teeth and gums, pointing out what Dr. Vakili will do when they arrive at our office.
  7. Read books about visiting the dentist. You can find multiple titles at bookstores and online.
  8. Encourage your child to practice relaxation techniques such as guided breathing and meditation to help them relax when they are in the dentist’s chair. If they enjoy music, let them bring along some favorite music and a set of headphones so they can listen to soothing music during their appointment with Dr. Vakili.
  9. If your child experiences severe dental anxiety, we’re here to help. Please contact our office ahead of their visit to discuss options such as sedation dentistry or a calming appointment with our emotional support dog. Your child’s comfort and oral health are our top priorities, and we’ll work with you to find the best solution.
